2. SMART Goals

Your goals will serve no purpose until you track them. Take note of your goals and measure them periodically. I measure my goals every 15 days.

You can make it weekly or monthly. It gives you an idea about how far have you come and what improvements you need to make for days and months to come.

Believe me, this really is motivating.

4. Reward yourself

Whenever you complete a goal, you must treat yourself. You can go for a spa or a facial or for a movie or whatever you like.

This keeps your zeal alive and you will not lose your weight loss motivation.

You can burn those extra calories at home within your comfort zone. This is great aspect to start with. Laundry, mopping, vacuuming etc all the household tasks helps you burn some calories which may not be as good as gym circuits but atleast it helps you get somewhere.

According to my own experience eating our Indian traditional food in controlled portion does not lead to weight gain. Instead it keeps you full for a longer time and prevents you from snacking. Snacking is actually your biggest enemy when you try to lose weight. Even if you want to snack, opt for fox nut, almonds, walnuts etc.

You must always stick to a heavy breakfast, heavy lunch and lighter dinner. Eat home-cooked vegetables, lentils (dal), rice and chappati. Keep it all native and you won’t even feel the need to eat junk food.

I advocate about drinking water all the time. Right from the time I wake up till the time I am  awake, water is always there at my rescue. You must drink warm water with honey/lemon as the first in the morning.

I generally store 1 litre warm water in a kettle and drink it in portions every half hour or one hour. Warm water activates metabolism, it helps to get rid of  ‘Water-weight’, keeps your digestive system controlled and relieves you from constipation. Apart from this it also relieves nasal congestion and keeps you hydrated.

If not warm water, try drinking water at room temperature. Make sure you drink about 100-150 ml water 30 minutes each before and after your main meals.

 Exercise at Home, No Need to Roam!

Who says you cannot workout at home? You just need a little space to begin with. Start with normal jumps, jumping jacks and skipping rope. Do as many as you can initially and then as and when you gain strength and endurance, increase the count.

I remember when I was in Grade 10, I used to wake up at 5:30 AM, head to my terrace and skipped rope for about 30 minutes.

Some people advocate on walking to reducing weight but honestly, I feel walking is just to keep us active. It is not an exercise. However, if your body is not well adapted to jumping at the moment, you can always walk. The idea here is to ATLEAST START! And gradually when you gain momentum, you can jump and run.

Also, once you get a hang of it, you can invest a little in a mat and 2 pairs of dumbbell (one lighter and other heavier). There are a lot of workouts available with only these equipments. You can try them and it definitely helps in reducing weight while you are at home.

So these are some golden rules to follow if you aim to lose weight at home. The results may not be as quick as you may get by going to gym or playing a sport but definitely gets you started. You will be motivated to go ahead and try more ways to reduce weight.

Certain tips to help you:

  • Cut down your sugar intake: 1 tablespoon sugar is more than enough in a day. Also fruits have natural sugar. So don’t add to much sugar in your diet
  • Don’t snack much: While we snack we actually eat a lot of packaged junk food which actually will reverse all our efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you feel hungry grab some almond, or other seeds  and enjoy it.
  • Don’t skip breakfast: Many studies, time and again, have proved that breakfast keeps you full and helps you to lose weight. Skipping breakfast should not be an option under any circumstances.

Always remember consistency is the key. You will have to religiously follow these to reduce weight at home or at gym for that matter but it demands your 100% efforts. Stay motivated, read books about fitness and reducing weight and make these points a lifestyle change.

It is always said that it takes 21 days to build a habit and 90 days to make a lifestyle. You need to make these small changes in your lifestyle and it will have a mammoth impact on your way of living.
