“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” I didn’t say that. Zig Zaglar, an American author and motivational speaker, did.
Hi Gracious Gang!
I hope you all are doing great!
For all those who are struggling to find weight loss motivation, this article is a must read.
Motivating yourself is a continuous process. It’s a vicious circle. Today you are motivated to pursue an action for one motive and tomorrow your idea about it will change.
Every action we take in our life has a certain motive behind it. And this is what drives us to achieve our goals.
Losing weight and heading towards fitness is no exception. You must have certain motivation to lose weight. And this motivation can be categorised into Extrinsic and Intrinsic factors.
Extrinsic motivational factors are those which are outside your scope and drive you to move in a particular direction based on external parameters. Whereas, intrinsic motivation originates from within yourself to accomplish a goal.
For example – you went to a party and someone commented on your dress, about how it did not fit you. You felt embarrassed and decided to shed a few kilos. This is extrinsic motivation. But suppose you have a stage fright and it seems to you that if you lose weight your confidence will eventually increase; then it’s an intrinsic motivational factor. So all you need is weight loss motivation.
In order to chase your goals you need to be motivated to lose weight.
How to stay motivated to lose weight?
Now, the question is how to find that weight loss motivation and how to sustain it over a period of time.
Here are 7 points that will keep you on a go:
1. Find out the “Why”
What is it that you want to lose weight for? Why have you taken this Fitness journey? What is your purpose? As we discussed earlier, these can be either extrinsic or intrinsic factors. Find out what you want to lose weight for.
If you want to get fit for yourself, driven by factors like self-confidence, personality development, nothing like it.
2. SMART Goals
Your goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Do not set vague goals.
For example, “I want to look like my favourite actress” is a vague goal instead define how are you planning to work on losing those body dimensions.
Your goals should be like, I will exercise 5 days a week for at least 45 min each of these days or something like I will give up on junk food and try to lose 2 inches from my waist.
3. Track your Goals
Your goals will serve no purpose until you track them. Take note of your goals and measure them periodically. I measure my goals every 15 days.
You can make it weekly or monthly. It gives you an idea about how far have you come and what improvements you need to make for days and months to come.
Believe me, this really is motivating.
